Vacation mindset, high calorie refreshing drinks (alcoholic or otherwise), festivals, patios, backyard BBQ’s, and eating later can all play a part in our health goals getting off track in the summer months.

Change in seasons deeply affects human beings physically and mentally. Summer, with its abundant sunlight, allows the brain to produce serotonin — the mood-boosting hormone. As days shorten and summer wraps up, our serotonin levels can decrease, leading to feelings of sadness or irritability. This is something we often hear about in winter months with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) but it can ring true when summer comes to an end as well.

As an Integrative Nutritionist, something I work on with clients during this time of year is getting back on track with our daily healthy habits to fast track feeling better. Ninety percent of how long we are going to live is based on our daily habits, and only 10% on our genetics. Below are some of my best tips for implementing new healthy habits, in Autumn or anytime of the year:

Start Small and Gradual – Begin with one or two habits to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Small, specific changes one at a time are more sustainable.
Set Clear and Specific Goals – Define what you want to achieve. Specific goals are easier to track and help you stay motivated.
Create a Routine – Incorporate new habits into your daily routine. Consistency is key to making habits stick.
Use Reminders – Set alarms, use sticky notes, or use habit-tracking apps to remind you of your new habits.
Stay Accountable – Share your goals with a friend, work with a health coach or join a like-minded community with similar health objectives. Accountability partners can provide support and encouragement.
Be Patient and Persistent – Understand that it takes time to form new habits. Be patient and keep pushing forward, even if you encounter setbacks.
Celebrate Small Wins – Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Celebrating milestones keeps you motivated.
Focus on One Day at a Time – Focusing on the present can reduce anxiety about long-term changes.
Make it Enjoyable – Choose activities you enjoy and find fun ways to integrate them into your routine. Enjoyable habits are more likely to be maintained.
Reflect and Adjust – Regularly reflect on your progress and adjust your approach if necessary. Flexibility can help you overcome challenges and stay on track.

But my best piece of advice when it comes to making healthy habits stick?

Make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Healthy habits are the foundation of a healthy life; what we repeatedly do defines our wellbeing.
